Father's Day Golf Gift Guide

Give Dad the Gift of Walking Golf

Rounding into late spring and towards Father's Day, dads are in a fairly happy place. Nearly 80 percent of courses throughout the U.S. are open and the National Golf Foundation projects more than 90 percent will be back and running before June.

And if things go according to plan with the PGA Tour, dad will have golf to watch on TV with the Charles Schwab Challenge held at Colonial Country Club June 11-14 in Fort Worth, Tex. As will he the next weekend, on Father's Day, with the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C.

All of this is to say, fear not sons, daughters, spouses and significant others - golf gifts are back on the menu for dad in 2020. That stated, may we offer a slightly different approach this year: give dad the gift of walking golf.

Walking has not only emerged as the safest way to playing during the COVID-19 crisis, it is strongly recommended and even required at numerous courses and clubs. This could be the case for the foreseeable future as operators look to maintain social distancing guidelines and are short on golf carts due to single rider requirements.

It's also the way the game was meant to be played. It's what makes the game a sport, and even if dad doesn't play the sport particularly well, he'll burn between 700 and 1,000 calories hoofing 18 holes.

Here's a cheat sheet of walking-friendly gear and apparel to keep dad looking good and performing up to his potential.

The Pete Dye Golf Trail
Pete Dye Golf Course at French Lick

The Pete Dye Golf Trail

Download Guide to Golf in Indiana

It's not a stretch to say that the late, great, hall-of-fame golf course architect Pete Dye was the Donald Ross of his generation. Dye's footprint on U.S. golf is prolific, just as Ross' golfing 'footprint' remains on full display in the U.S. Golf legend and Ohio native Jack Nicklaus, aka the Golden Bear, himself a world-renowned golf course architect, is a big fan of Dye's.

"I think Pete Dye was the most creative, imaginative, and unconventional golf course designer that I have ever been around," said the Golden Bear.

While Dye's most publicized project is probably the Stadium Course at the TPC in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, the roots of his golf design genius are in Indiana. Dye's first 18-hole creation was the Maple Creek Golf and Country Club - opened in 1961 and originally named the Heather Hills Golf and Country Club -- in Indianapolis.

To honor Dye's Indiana ties, The Pete Dye Golf Trail was formed in the Hoosier state. It's a seven-course trail: The Pete Dye Course (French Lick), Brickyard Crossing Golf Club (Indianapolis), The Fort Golf Course (Indianapolis), Maple Creek Golf & Country Club (Indianapolis), Tippecanoe Country Club (Monticello), and the Ackerman-Alan and Kampen courses at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex (West Lafayette).

Summer Golf Hot List along the Outer Banks
Summer Golf Hot List along the Outer Banks

Summer Golf Hot List along the Outer Banks

The most authoritative statewide source of golf course rankings in a state that arguably has some of the nation's best courses has spoken for the 25th year ... and the Outer Banks again sports a collection of top shelf golf experiences.

According to the esteemed North Carolina Golf Panel, three courses moved up among the Top 50 You Can Play in North Carolina, featuring No. 16 Currituck Club, No. 23 Kilmarlic Golf Club and No. 33 Nags Head Golf Links. In addition, Nags Head provided the No. 2 Best Bang for the Buck offering across the Coastal Region.

Golf around North Carolina's storied Outer Banks represents an outstanding selection of enjoyable and affordable yet quality golf courses - along with spacious accommodations and a plethora of off-course activities that have transformed the Outer Banks into an outdoor sportsman's paradise.

From true barrier island links courses to modern parkland marvels located inland, the region is chock full of variety. The challenges at The Pointe Golf Club, The Carolina Club, Nags Head, Kilmarlic and Currituck Club are as spectacular as the coastal views they possess. There may be no better location for a true golf vacation than the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Afternoon drives take on a whole new meaning along the coast just minutes north of Rees Jones's 18-hole gem known as The Currituck Club, up 10 spots to No. 56 in North Carolina's Top 100. The Corolla keeper is the grandest design along the coast "sculpted on the type of land where golf began" among 600 acres of dunes, wetlands, maritime forests and sound seascapes.

Every time golfers tackle historic Nags Head, also included in North Carolina's Top 100, they find themselves facing a different challenge. Crafted by Bob Moore, Nags Head plays hard along the inner waterway on the southern end of the Outer Banks, where capricious breezes off sound-side waters create a unique golfing experience each and every day. With its coastal winds, rugged shoreline, island holes, seaside vistas, and tees and greens are separated by rolling dunes and wild sea grass, Nags Head bears far more than a passing resemblance to the famed Scottish golf links.

Home to various golf cottages located near its entrance, Kilmarlic is a popular Tom Steele design nestled along the marshland of the Albemarle Sound. North Carolina's No. 78 course in the Top 100 is a wonderful mainland design amidst 605 beautiful acres of maritime forest providing a pure OBX layout with water and wetlands virtually in play at all times.

Located just across the Wright Memorial Bridge, The Pointe is the first in a sequence of championship golf courses - layouts close to the sounds and ocean but more parkland in settings. The course is also said to be the first in the country to have the A-1 bent grass - a dense, disease-resistant strain - installed across its corridors. Meanwhile, The Carolina Club's positioning as the first design heading into town from the north and last one on the way out makes it the ideal play on either side of your OBX golf getaway.

There is A Lot Brewing at Pinehurst

There is A Lot Brewing at Pinehurst

The Home of Golf in America, the Pinehurst Resort in Moore County, North Carolina is getting ready to open up for their guests. In 1895, James Walker Tufts initially purchased 500 acres and eventually added 5,500 more in the North Carolina Sandhills with the vision of building "a health resort for people of modest means," to help with the disease commonly known as Consumption. He named it Pinehurst thinking that the scent of the ever-present pine trees would help those afflicted.

125 years later the Covid-19 pandemic, very similar to Consumption, shuttered most of the Resort and Village in early spring of 2020. On your next visit to the re-opened Pinehurst, you will be able to enjoy some of the finest accommodations in three totally unique Inns, a myriad of amenities and a variety of golf unmatched anywhere in the world. With 10 golf courses(including 'The Cradle-a fun 9-hole short course'), 16 tennis courts, multiple lawn sports, shopping and dining, Pinehurst Resort can fit the bill no matter the size of your group or interest.

This past autumn, the 43 room Manor built in 1923 was completely transformed into a casual and stylish inn. While the exterior is still the same, guests will find a completely fresh and contemporary lodging experience. "Our intention was to improve upon and modernize the guest experience while still preserving the Manor's unique charm," says Bob Dedman Jr., Pinehurst Resort's CEO. "I think we have accomplished that in fine fashion. Our mantra is simple: Always Pinehurst, but always better."

The Manor has always been a haven for golfers and the Pinehurst team made sure it kept that feel while modernizing the rooms and meeting spaces. Golf groups can congregate in the two lovely appointed hospitality suites, the Library or the Club Room, both on the first floor accommodating 12-20 players each. The centerpiece of the Inn is the North & South Bar that pays homage to the North & South Amateur Championship that has been played at Pinehurst since 1901. The ceiling of the Bar is covered with an illustration of the original Donald Ross drawings of the four Pinehurst courses he designed, and the walls are adorned with vintage advertising and period photos from the North & South, the longest consecutively running amateur tournament in America. The Bar has a menu of spirits unlike any other in the area, served in a relaxed atmosphere with style and tradition both inside and on the wrap-around patio replete with fire pits.
