Montego Bay Golf Guide
Montego Bay is the golf capital of Jamaica, with four resort courses that would headline most Caribbean islands all sitting within about twenty miles of each other. The Tryall Club, a Ralph Plummer design from the late 1950s west of town, is the historic heavyweight, famous as the five-time host of the Johnnie Walker World Championship when the world's best came to Jamaica every December. East of the city on the old Rose Hall plantation, White Witch is the modern showpiece, a Robert von Hagge and Rick Baril design named for Annee Palmer, the plantation mistress who allegedly murdered three husbands, with Caribbean views from sixteen of its eighteen holes and enough elevation change to earn every one of them. Next door, Cinnamon Hill tumbles down Mount Zion to the sea past plantation ruins, the waterfall from Live and Let Die behind the fifteenth green, and Johnny Cash's former holiday home off the fourteenth. Half Moon, the Robert Trent Jones Sr. course at the resort of the same name, is the steady hand of the group, a classic Jones resort layout with the nastiest bunkering on the island.
The rest of the trip is pure Jamaica. Tour the reportedly haunted Rose Hall Great House at night if you dare, eat jerk chicken from a roadside pan, raft the Martha Brae, take a boat into the glowing waters of the Luminous Lagoon in Falmouth, and finish with a rum on Doctor's Cave Beach. Sangster International Airport sits minutes from the Rose Hall courses with nonstops from most of the eastern half of the United States, making this one of the easiest bucket list golf trips on the map.
